In all seriousness ...

Since I've set a precedent in this blog by mentioning the passing of various figures in the worlds of sports and entertainment, I would be remiss if I didn't make mention of a tragedy that hit a lot closer to home. The people I'm about to talk about weren't stars of the silver screen or known for any exploits on the hardwood or gridiron, but they shared a different kind of fame: they were known among the locals as hardworking, kind, good people, and their loss leaves a void in the community that can't really ever be replaced.

One week ago today, in the town I grew up in, a house fire claimed the lives of a family of six; the parents were 41 and 35 years of age, while their children were 11, 9, 6 and 6 months. I didn't know the family - the dad graduated high school about 9 years before I did, but by all accounts, he was just as decent a person as you could ever hope to meet. The same holds true for his wife.

Their church has set up a website at weisbachchurch.com with information and photos about the family, a video of the funeral held at the Shoals school gym on Wednesday, as well as information about memorial contributions.

Please. If you do nothing else with your weekend, at the very least, please check the batteries in your smoke alarms. If you don't have at least one working smoke alarm in your home, run down to Wal-Mart or K-Mart or the store of your choice and pick one up - ideally, more than one if you can afford it - and mount them in the various rooms of your home. They really can save your life if the unthinkable should happen.
