Speaking of boys' basketball, I'll make note here of a trend that rankles me.
It is, as I stated in the paragraph above (as well as in all other references to it throughout this blog) boys' basketball. Basketball that is played at a high school level or below is boys' basketball.
Basketball that is played by adult males - even at IU - is men's basketball.
More and more, though, I've noticed that teams composed of high-school-age males are being referred to as men's basketball teams.
I even noticed it at McDonald's in Loogootee. Last week was sectional week, and I saw that their marquee at the intersection of U.S. 50 and U.S. 231, facing north, read something about "welcome men's basketball sectional," or some such.
Ugh.
Remember - just giving something a label doesn't make it so. Teenaged males are not men ... come to think of it, some adult males really aren't, either, but let's not give our schoolboys an undeserved air of adulthood by calling their teams "men's" teams.
